How to Detect Tampered Dice

Aside from cards, dice are also one of the most widely-used instruments in modern gambling. Players have to be cautious and check whether the dice used during games are tampered by opponents who have low regard for fair play. Being victimized by cheaters who use tampered dice will cost players their chances of winning, and ultimately, their capital.

The most commonly-used dice are those shaped like cubes, with each of its six faces marked with dots ranging from one to six. Popular games like craps and backgammon use this kind of dice. The six faces of poker dice, meanwhile, feature an ace, a king, a queen, a jack, a ten and a nine. Five pieces of poker dice are thrown at a time. Poker dice are used to have certain combinations appear, much like using a deck of cards.

The typical dice should have spots that are equally embedded on each face. If any of the spots are raised, then that is a tampered die. The total markings on opposite faces of a die should always be equal to seven. For example, the side of the die with five dots should be opposite the side with two dots. The edges of a die should also be all equally straight and smooth, not rounded or curved. If you come across a die that does not follow these characteristics, politely disengage yourself from playing.

If dice are tampered, then certain combinations will appear more often than others. Another way to make this happen is by "loading" the dice, or making certain side heavier than the other sides. Tungsten and platinum are among the materials that can be placed on a die to make certain sides heavier. If a die is loaded, the heavier side will often end up on the bottom, instead of having all six sides having an equal chance of being at the bottom during throws.

One method of detecting loaded dice is the Scarne Test. According to John Scarne, a gambling expert in the United States, players can check for loaded dice by turning them on one of its edges, much like rotating a top. If certain sides end up at the bottom significantly more often than the others, then that is a loaded die.

Being observant and cautious of the dice used can protect players from opponents who have no respect for the ethics of the game, so it is important to be aware of the features of an honest die.
